Hello and welcome to Nurture & Nanny’s September Newsletter!

Move over summer - The school has officially started!  Now is the time when we need to get organized.  The sound of morning alarm clocks will be ringing in our ears again, the days will be getting shorter, and before you know it, we’ll be planning for the holidays.

Here are some tips that helped me when I was a nanny and the children in my care were about to start school again.  It made the transition from summer to school a whole lot smoother.

-         Create a family calendar and place it somewhere where everyone can see it.  With PTA Meetings, soccer practice, play dates, dentist appointments - the whole “family team” needs to know what is going on, where it is going on and with who.  An excellent idea for family management is to color code entries for each family member.  That will help keep busy lives straight.  A great website to print out calendars is www.abcteach.com.  Not only does it have printable calendars for each month, but there are some fantastic activities for your children to do when they have some down time.

-         Start implementing early bedtime now!  This will help your children adjust to the new school routine gradually.  No one likes a grumpy child in the morning, so begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, close to the hour they’ll need when school starts.

-         Start paying attention to meal times.  During the summer we tend to feed our kids later in the morning and randomly throughout the day, depending on the activities we have planned.  Start feeding your children at around the same time they will be eating at school.  That way you can be sure that they will be eating their lunches at lunchtime and not in the car on the way home from school.

-         Get your kids wardrobe ready.  Go through their closets and donate all the outgrown or worn out clothing from last year.  Get their school wardrobes ready so that you have a stress-free morning.

-         Start getting into the habit of planning the following morning the evening before.  Set the breakfast table as you clear the dinner dishes.  Plan out what will go in the school lunches and prep whatever can be prepped so that your morning will run smoother.  Lay out their school outfit the night before if that helps.

All these tips can help get your day started on the right foot.  Just remember to always leave an open spot on the fridge for a job well done!

 All the best,

 Lara
